Behind the Scenes: How We Discover Titles Poised for Foreign Rights Success

When DropCap Rights Agency launched its exclusive online marketplace for indie authors, we had one goal in mind: to use the platform to scout the best and most exciting titles to bring to the foreign rights market.

It’s only been a few months of launch, but the titles we are seeing coming in to DropCap Marketplace from authors around the country are blowing our minds with potential on the global market!

These three titles in our marketplace have collectively secured four international rights contracts so far.

Authors new to the marketplace often ask us what happens to their book after it’s been included in our platform.

We created this helpful video for authors to explain, but there’s nothing like having a real, live human look through the latest and see what books really rise to the top.

Watch Now: What to Expect When Your Book is Live on DropCap Marketplace

Q & A With Allison Olson:
Literary Agent for DropCap Marketplace

Q: What are you looking for in titles that come through the marketplace?

A: You know how they always say “never judge a book by its cover”? Well, the opposite is true with DropCap Marketplace. I can’t help it—I’m always looking for titles with covers that I know will make people stop and take notice!

After that, it’s all about sales. One of the best ways for us to convince our overseas buyers that a book will be successful in their market is to prove that it has already achieved domestic success.

A Royal Shade of Blue, by Aven Ellis, is a USA Today bestseller which was scouted through DropCap Marketplace and is now represented by our agenting team at DropCap.

Q: What are you doing to promote the titles in DropCap Marketplace?

A: Marketing books that are part of our platform happens three distinct ways:

  • Organic and paid advertising across social media platforms, run by our digital marketing team

  • Email marketing, which has always been one of DropCap’s best ways to connect rights buyers with the titles they are looking for

  • Paid promotional opportunities that are only available to DropCap Marketplace members including,

    • Featured placement at international book fairs

    • Hand-pitching by our agents to select rights buyers

    • Targeted email marketing campaigns to rights buyers

Our DropCap digital marketing team promotes our authors across social media channels. Seen here: Barbara Kingsolver, Joanna Penn and Ann Gomez.

Q: How do you see DropCap Marketplace expanding in the future?

I can’t begin to tell you how excited we are to make our DropCap Marketplace bigger, better, and more beneficial for authors!

In the upcoming weeks, we're excited to unveil our enhanced website featuring a comprehensive dashboard that seamlessly integrates the award-winning technology setting DropCap apart in the international publishing market.

Our exclusive technology will allow authors to see all kinds of data points about their book that they can use to make informed marketing decisions, including comparable titles, keywords, and so much more!

Be sure to list your book on our exclusive foreign rights marketplace and take advantage of all the ways we can help connect your book with interested rights buyers around the world.
